Welcome to Costa Tropical Dreams.
Did you know that in southern Spain you could ski in the morning and then sunbathe on the beach in the afternoon?? We didn't! Well that was until we were told about La Herradura; a lovely typical Spanish town, where even the Spanish come to holiday.
Overview
La Herradura which means "Horseshoe", so named because of its picturesque bay is arguably "the jewel of the Costa Tropical of Granada Province, Spain". It has hot summers and warm winters allowing the local growth of the tropical fruit from which the area gets it's name. Sailing, windsurfing, scuba diving or just lazing around can fill your days. The evenings offer a wide variety of restaurants from the chiringuita on the beach, and dozens more along the promenade to little back street bars.
La Herradura has a good variety of shops including supermarkets, bakers and the covered market on the seafront offering fresh produce every day. For more varied shopping the towns of Nerja and Almunecar are in easy reach. The old town offers quaint streets to explore and for the energetic there are plenty of walks in the surrounding hills. The spectacular mountain scenery of the Alpujarras is only an hours drive away.
The Weather
Sea breezes fan the shoreline throughout most of the year, tempering the severe summer heat, and there is no rainy season. In fact, it sometimes doesn't rain for many months at a stretch. When it does, it can be torrential and often a year's supply of water will fall in a couple of weeks. But, on average, it only rains 20 days a year. Not a very good reason for bringing your umbrella.
In wintertime, temperatures very rarely fall below 10°C, averaging an impressive 18°C throughout the low season. In summer, this average rises to about 25°C with midday temperatures often well into the 30's.

Granada & the Sierra Nevada
Approximately an hour from the coastline of La Herradura is the spectacular city of Granada. The great complex of the Alhambra “is the best preserved medieval Arab palace in the world, and with nearly two million visitors annually, it is also the most popular monument in Spain”, (Top 10, Andalucia & Costa Del Sol, 2004).
The Sierra Nevada (“snowy mountains”) includes Spain’s tallest peaks and are Europe’s second highest mountain range after the Alps. They have become popular for trekking, skiing, and for exploring the villages on the southern slopes of Las Alpujarras. With just over an hours drive you can ski in the morning and play tennis, swim or relax and sunbathe in La Herradura in the afternoon/evening sun.
Los Girasoles Urbanisation

Our two bedroom house forms part of the urbanisation called Los Girasoles, (The Sunflowers) which is situated towards the the promontary of the Cerro Gordo. The house enjoys lovely views of La Herradura bay from its private sun terrace and bedroom balcony. We are a one minute walk away from a large municipal swimmimg pool and children's pool which also boasts a pool side bar with light snacks and refreshments available, table tennis and a pool table.
Residents here also make use of other facilities, such as the tennis courts, paddel tennis and the small bar and restaurant. A post box to send your post cards is also located here.

Airports
The nearest airports which serve the area of the Costa Tropical are Malaga (90km) and Granada (80km). Further east, you can also fly into Almeria (130km). The new motorway is opening within the next couple of months (March/April 2007), which will mean that the drive from each airport will be considerably reduced.
